Prep Transition at Meadow Heights Primary School 2025

Children enrolling in Victorian schools must turn 5 by 30^th April in the year of entry and Prep enrolment usually commences in the year prior to school.

Once you have chosen to enrol at Meadow Heights Primary School and you have completed an enrolment form you will be invited to attend our Prep Transition program.  We take great pride in the way in which our students make the transition from Kindergarten to their Prep year, we aim to make it as enjoyable, smooth and positive as possible.

We offer an extensive transition program that commences in term 3, with an informal interview session in order to meet our new students and their family and continues through until formal Prep Transition in November.  We have found that by developing a strong relationship between our school, the new Prep children and their parents as soon as possible, we can better plan programs to suit the specific needs of our children.

Our program also helps to make our new students and their families feel part of our Meadow Heights Primary School community.

The Foundation Year

Beginning school is a very important milestone for students and their families.  At Meadow Heights PS we understand that it can be a daunting experience and therefore we take extra care to make the transition from kinder as seamless as possible. 

Orientation and keeping a positive outlook about all aspects of the changes from school and home is key.

Our Prep students are supported with:

• a relaxed entry to the classroom through developmental play-based learning
• a Foundation playground with climbing equipment and a sandpit.
• scheduled toilet and eating breaks.
• Altered school hours throughout February.
• name badges that identify them to all staff and students.
• senior school buddies to nurture, mentor and help the young students.
• daily individual dismissal to parents.
• A start up social-skills program linked to our school values of respect, responsibility, excellence and pride

We also offer:

• an exciting and stimulating teaching and learning program that is both innovative and caters to individual needs through differentiated learning
• dedicated Literacy & Numeracy blocks (minimum of 5 sessions of each Reading, Writing & Mathematics)
• A literacy program that encompasses the ‘Big Six’ components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and oral language.
• Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) which is a gross and fine motor development program aimed at developing skills for Literacy and learning.
• specialist lessons for all children in The Arts, S.T.E.M, PE and LOTE (Turkish).
• support programs such as EAL support, Literacy Support.
• regular opportunities for students to participate in staged performances, both as a level and grade.
• Inquiry based learning which involves students forming their own questions about a topic and having time to explore the answers.
